The City of Covington, KY, selected GRW to design the reconstruction of approximately one-quarter mile of City street that includes Johnson Street and West RiverCenter Boulevard adjacent to the Northern Kentucky Convention Center and IRS processing facility.
The purpose was to replace pavement and beautify the corridor while providing better lane use and connectivity between the convention center and the hotels, restaurants, and other tourist attractions to the west, as well as to provide wider and safer sidewalks including ornamental lighting, ADA compliance, and landscaped buffer strips. Existing mature trees bordering the corridor were preserved. Work for this project was funded by federal SNK grant and local match monies.
Additional corridor improvements included:
- Improved and updated storm drainage structures. Sanitation District No. 1 requested GRW research and analyze storm, sanitary, and combined sewers, and, where feasible, to provide system separation.
- Designed an underground conduit system and coordinated with Duke Energy’s design of ornamental lighting. Also coordinated with Northern Kentucky Water District to avoid water line conflicts and to relocate hydrants out of sidewalks.
- Concrete pavement was detailed to precise vertical and horizontal alignments providing proper drainage while matching the grade of existing parking lots, entrances, and buildings.
- Connectivity and access to busy corridor venues was maintained by successfully coordinating with businesses, NKY Convention Center, and TANK. Both vehicular and pedestrian detours were provided during construction.
