To reduce congestion and improve safety, GRW designed the widening of a 1.6 mile section of Liberty/Todds Road for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG). The three-lane urban roadway includes curb and gutters, sidewalks, handicap ramps, and bicycle lanes. The center two-way left turn lane provides storage for left turn movements throughout the corridor; additional travel lanes and right turn lanes were provide at congested areas and major intersections.
The project design also included the replacement of an existing two-lane bridge over I-75. The new, 326-foot, four-span structure includes a flush median, bike lanes, and a separated pedestrian walkway. The replacement bridge was built in two stages to maintain traffic on the existing bridge while a portion of the new bridge was built.
This project also included a large stream crossing that discharges across the Andover Golf and Country Club. Careful consideration of floodplain issues, as well as construction impacts and aesthetics, resulted in the design and construction of a three-sided precast concrete arch structure that blends well with its suburban surroundings.
GRW also designed the replacement of an existing corrugated steel pipe arch golf cart underpass that provided access under Todds Road for the Andover Golf and Country Club. The new 96’ long, 16’x8’, three-sided precast concrete arch structure allows two-way cart traffic and provides access for the maintenance equipment that was previously crossing Todds Road.
