GRW led the design team for the design-build of a women's medium-security Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) and minimum-security Federal Prison Camp located near Aliceville, AL. This $188 million project has a gross building area of approximately 624,312 SF, and can house approximately 1,790 inmates.

Mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems were designed by GRW’s in-house staff.  Highlights of the utilities systems include:

  • Central utilities plant (12,647 SF) outside the secured perimeter
  • Four-pipe central heating/cooling system distributing water to 40 variable volume and multi-zone air handling systems
  • Three 215-horsepower, natural gas-fired boilers
  • Three centrifugal chillers providing 1200 tons of cooling
  • Geothermal HVAC system outside the secure perimeter
  • Direct digital control (DDC) utility management control system (UMCS)
  • Two medium voltage circuit breaker feeders wired to a 1200 ampere bus primary selective (split bus) 15 KV class medium voltage circuit breaker switchgear lineup
  • Four megawatt power generation facility includes two identical gensets (paralleled), each rated 2000 KW standby with 12.47/7.2 kilovolt, 3 phase output
  • Exterior yard lighting of 100-foot, galvanized steel, high mast lighting standards with 10 and 12 fixtures per pole (1000-watt, high pressure sodium, semi-cutoff luminaires and 1000-watt, clear metal halide, semi-cutoff luminaires)

The Aliceville project is the Federal Bureau of Prisons' first LEED Silver FCI. One of the energy and environmental highlights is the use of a fully automated, energy recovering system that reclaims, filters, and treats laundry waste water from washing machines for reuse.
