GRW and Vescio’s SportsFields teamed for the newly renovated Burch-Nau Field at Union College in Barbourville, KY. This project consisted of removing the college’s existing grass football field and replacing it with a synthetic turf field expanded and configured for both the football and soccer teams. The new synthetic surface is 98,000 square feet in area and is surrounded with 29,000 square feet of asphalt pedestrian area. The synthetic surface along with the associated trenched herringboned drainage system was designed to handle a 6” one-hour storm. One of the primary goals of the college was to be able to play on the new surface in the 2007 season. With a construction start date of July 7th there was an extremely tight schedule to make the deadline for the opening game on September 8th. The Union College Athletic Department believes that they are one of a very few private colleges to have installed synthetic turf. This was a design/build project with construction services provided by Vescio’s SportsFields.
