GRW has planned and designed facilities for Keeneland, a Thoroughbred racetrack and sales company in Lexington, KY, since 1964.
Key projects have included:
- Keeneland Race Course Entrance and Access Road: Keeneland's entrance, accessible from Versailles Road or Man O' War Boulevard, is a four-lane, lighted road with grass medians. This drive winds through Keeneland for about one mile and leads to parking areas and the sales pavilion.
- Keeneland Race Course Improvements: GRW has played a key role in the renovation of both the main racing track and the training track. Polytrack, the focal point of one renovation, is an engineered racing surface that combines a synthetic top layer with a unique drainage system. For the Polytrack installation project, GRW was responsible for preparing the layout of the new track and construction plans of the longitudinal drainage system for the new Polytrack race course, along with design, GPS surveying and aerial mapping of the project site. A subsequent improvement to the race track, approximately 10 years later and following a yearlong planning and research period, involved the renovation and conversion of the track back to dirt. For the project, GRW was involved in all aspects of the work including selection of track material, design of the test plot, engineering of the track section, and development of the unique drainage system specially designed to maintain consistency.
In addition, GRW has designed numerous utility projects, lighting improvements and the site work for more than 30 facilities including quarantine barns, a training center, muck facility, bathhouses, dormitory building, grandstand expansion, walking rings and infield tunnel.
