The Appalachian Regional Airport was constructed from a reclaimed surface mine site to replace the Mingo County Airport located in Williamson, WV. The initial design phase for the development of the new airport included a 5,000-foot long runway, designated Runway 8-26. Subsequent projects involved a partial parallel taxiway, main parking apron, complete airfield lighting system and a secure perimeter fence.
